Switching Roles


                                                            Role Reversals
    Role reversals in the family is an increasing trend. This works for many families. There are advantages and disadvantages of switching roles between the husband and wife.
    There are many advantages to switching roles the traditional roles of husband and wife. One, advantage to switching roles is women are making more money. According to the USA today article. Women make more money than  men 28% of the time. In 12 million households wives earned more than their husbands. Another, advantage of switching roles is role reversal may be a better personality fit for the husband and wife. Being a woman doesn’t always mean being a stay at home mom. Some women prefer working instead. Not all men want to be the bread winner. They prefer to stay at home and raise the kids. This is acceptable.
     There are also man disadvantages in switching roles between the husband and wife. One disadvantage is once established in the role as a bread winner it may be harder to switch back if desired. When children come along the wife may decide she wants to stay home. This may not be financially possible if she is the main provider of income and health insurance. Also, another way it may be harder is the men may find out he feels like he should be providing financially for the family because of long time traditional roles. Traditionally, the man is supposed to be the “bread winner”. In the USA today articles examples included men who felt their role as a housewife was a disappointment.
   The traditional role of husband as bread winner and wife as a stay at home mom is a thing of the past. Role reversal is increasing. There are advantages and disadvantages to this. It is up to the individual couple to decide what is best for them.
